I loved Isabeau - she was a really fiesty and strong female character and I particularly enjoyed the chapters that were told from her perspective. She becomes entangled in the affairs of the Drake family and in particular that of Logan Drake, but she also has to face being confronted with the vampire who made her and then left her for dead. She was changed back in the days of the French Revolution and buried underground for several centuries before she was revived and became a Hound 'Princess'. Croix is a vampire but not just any vampire. I found that there were quite a bewildering array of names, groups and families mentioned at the start, which I had to concentrate on so I didn't get them all mixed-up. I think this could easily be read as a stand-alone story, although it probably would have helped to have known some of the additional background information. I haven't read the first book, 'My Love Lies Bleeding', but it didn't take me long to pick up the thread of the story or get acquainted with the characters. This is book 2 in the Drake Chronicles series by Alyxandra Harvey. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts-first drink, first cigarette, first kiss-while Marlena’s dangerous habits harden and calcify. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena’s orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. But everything changes when she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Julie Buntin’s searing debut novel MARLENA tells the story of two girls and the feral year that cost one of them her life, and defined the other’s for decades.Ĭat, age 15, is depressed and lonely when she moves to Silver Lake, MI with her older brother and newly divorced, often drunk, mother. She writes the kind of piercing, revelatory sentences you have to read to whomever is near, sentences you find yourself remembering years later.” – Jonathan Safran Foer “Julie Buntin captures that unique moment at the precipice of adulthood with emotional honesty and insight. Julie Buntin’s MARLENA is an electric debut novel about love, addiction, and loss. *Disregard the notification that will appear after Booking* RSVP appreciated: fill out the “Bookings” form at the bottom of this page. 28 Adams Street (Corner of Adams & Water Street the Archway)įor more information, please call 718.666.3049 By day, they are lead by twenty-year-old Damali Richards, who along with her guardians are Spoken Word artists that travel the country performing their craft. The Vampire Huntress Legend Series is a twelve-book series written by L.A. Mill advances the audacious argument that “the sole end for which mankind are warranted … in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection.” Thus, he demands “liberty of … conscience … in the most comprehensive sense,” of which freedom of expression and the press are “practically inseparable” parts. Of all the works written in defense of free speech, and of liberalism more broadly, few have been as celebrated as John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, which is widely regarded as the definitive source for free speech advocacy. Mill defines it, to be regarded as so precious? The condition of human life is such that we must of necessity be restrained and compelled by circumstances in nearly every action of our lives. Anna's aunt is something of a big deal in the antiquities and starts to teach Anna cause apparently she has no prospects besides taking care of her aunt and her home called the Queen's House. The main character of Anna is thrust upon her aunt who makes Voldemort look cuddly. Holt follows her formula of a main character left orphaned cause of reasons. It's a messed up romantic suspense with barely developed characters besides Chantal. And as Moonlight said elsewhere, this book really isn't Gothic. I guessed some of what was ultimately revealed. Holt or her publishers should have pushed forth this book is focused on two main characters (Anna and Chantal) and that most of the book is told by Chantal's point of view. I had high hopes for this one, but when it turned into Chantal's journal entries (alternate title) I lost interest in this book. So maybe I should stop reading Holt? Cause the last few books have been underwhelming to the extreme. It is Mary Ann’s story of arriving and settling in San Francisco that makes the initial tale in which more and more tales of the mixed bunch of characters around her diverge and merge off of, some linking back on each other and some adding twists and turns you wouldn’t see coming. Initially moving in with her old friend Connie, who is a little more free and easy that Mary Ann can believe, she finds her own apartment at 28 Barbary Lane above her mysterious and initially rather odd seeming landlady Anna Madrigal, neighbours Mona, Mouse, Brian and soon Norman. ***** Transworld Books, paperback, 1978, fiction, 269 pages, from my own bookshelvesĪt the end of her vacation from her homeland of Cleveland, Mary Ann Singleton decides, rather recklessly for her, that staying in the city of San Francisco should be a more permanent move.
