![]() In addition to charting the defining characteristics of Trump’s discourse, The Twitter Presidency exposes how Trump’s rhetorical style threatens democratic norms, principles, and institutions. This commonality between communication practices and communication platform (manner and modality) struck a powerful emotive chord with his followers, who feel aggrieved at the decentering of white masculinity. There is, then, a structural homology between Trump’s general communication practices and the specific platform (Twitter) he uses to communicate with his base. His preferred modality of speaking, namely through Twitter, effectively channels and transmits the affective dimensions of white rage by taking advantage of the platform’s defining characteristics, which include simplicity, impulsivity, and incivility. In military fiction, the Australian armed forces join their American, Canadian, and European allies in fighting whatever threat has reared its ugly head. In alternate history, and indeed most speculative fiction, Australia is forgotten. Robert Hughes’ magnificent book The Fatal Shore: the Epic of Australia’s Founding is one of my favorite history books ever written. I will admit that some of my own interest in the country is in how it parallels America, my own homeland, as so much of its historical development is in the same vein. It is stereotyped as a land of murderous wildlife and eccentric people who love shrimp and danger. For most of us in the Anglosphere, Australia is reduced to something akin to a cross between Britain and America, a ‘British Texas,’ to quote one of the common internet memes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In a YA market saturated with series and trilogies, the distinction of a “companion” book is notable. I can forgive an entertaining novel for lacking ambition.
